This experience of learning Spanish for the first time has been a rewarding experience for me. Even though pronunciation could be a problem at times it has still been fun taking up the challenge of learning Spanish and keeping up with the other students. Ms. Wilburg has kept a low affective filter in the class room keeping it fun and lively even though stern at times. While some topics thought were easily understood some required more revision and practice.
The use of computer and internet in the class room was beneficial to both the students and teacher. It has brought interest and a difference to the classroom compared to the other subjects being thought. The task given was interesting since mostly they differed from the conventional way of doing things. The task seamed too much at times but was necessary to the learning process. For the first time at learning Spanish I expected it to be taught for a long period knowing that a foreign language cannot be learnt over night. I also expected this course to be more difficult than it actually was with mostly pronunciation exercises. Ms. Verbina on the other hand has pushed the class within the time period given her to learn at a quick pace and did a good job. The use of the class website greatly helped in this area, providing important information and practices that was necessary to the learning process. Even though some topics were not as easy to grasp I think the class did a good job at managing the work well that was given to us.
I enjoyed the fact that most of the information for the course was on line and could be attended to at any time. This brought a reassurance that I would have been able to manage the work well if there was any difficulty learning in the classroom. What I disliked is the amount of time sent on the many different tasks given to us that caused a lot of sleepless nights to get the work finished.
The course has been an interesting one with the use of projector and computer which is not commonly used in the classrooms of Guyana. Apart from the teaching of Spanish which was expected there was also a lot of valuable information taught from the multiple intelligence theory to the theory of affective filter. This information will play an important role in helping us as teachers to come up with suitable teaching methods to have a meaningful impact on students, not only for teaching Spanish but all other subjects.
What I would recommend is that there be more computers readily available to students if not, strong internet access via Wi-Fi so instructions could be comprehend faster for online task. I also think the amount of task given should be reduced since individually they are not worth a lot when compared to the total marks. These tasks when compared to other subjects they are probably 2/3 times as much. In concluding it was a fun and interesting learning experience that would not be possible without the experience of Ms. Verbina Wilburge.
